On the subject of green tea weight loss, Wikipedia, says there are no pages on weight loss management and green tea on the government website Pubmed.com. On Pubmed.com however, a search for green tea and obesity reveals that Wikipedia is blatantly wrong, with literally hundreds of articles showing that green tea does in fact, at least have some effect on losing weight. Up until now, most of the research has centered on a component of tea known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). This article, will focus primarily on three different studies, preformed by different universities, which show how the addition of tea can be an excellent supplement in your weight loss regimen.

The first study, titled, Effects of Green Tea Consumption on Blood Pressure, Total Cholesterol, Body Weight and Fat in Healthy Volunteers, was conducted by Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh Scotland. The study included 12 participants who drank an EGCG enriched tea that contain between 600 to 800 mg of EGCG. After 14 days, the results indicated a 2.36% reduction in body fat, simply by drinking green tea. The study goes on to admit, that the effects of drinking the tea, would most likely be greater in subjects suffering from obesity.

Another study, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, and conducted by the University of Medicine Berlin, performed a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot study, that included six overweight men. The men, were placed in several groups, with one group receiving water, another group receiving caffeine, another group receiving a placebo, and the test group receiving caffeine and tea extract with various levels of EGCG. Only the group receiving tea extract, showed any significant benefit in respect to fat oxidation a measure of how the body burns fat. Most interestingly, at a level of 122 mg EGCG, a level equivalent to drinking five cups of green tea, fat oxidation increased by 12%.

Finally, another study done by the University of Geneva, had participants drink five cups of tea per day. Without any additional activity, or supplements, the study found that the human body burned an additional 70 to 80 calories per day through the process of thermogenesis, as a result of the EGCG in tea. Assuming an average increase of 75 calories per day, simply drinking tea will burn 525 calories per week.

It is well known, that many of the diets shown prominently on TV, in magazines, and in the newspapers, are to say politely, less than effective. Moreover, many of these diets are expensive, requiring special supplements or prepackaged meals. There are also, the numerous exercise devices designed to "help you lose weight" but instead only extract precious cash from your wallet. Additionally, these diets require radical changes in your lifestyle. For example, when the Atkins diet was popular, everyone started avoiding carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are everywhere and to avoid them, requires that you not eat such common things like bread or rice. It is these radical changes I think, that cause so many to fail.
