Green tea is being promoted across the industry to help you losing weight. While there is some benefits in drinking green tea for weight loss, some people make it sound like just drink a bit of that tea and the pounds are starting to fall off. Sounds like we finally found the magic pill for weight loss?

Not quite, but there are certainly health and weight loss benefits that we can use to get slim, at least as one of many parts on your road to your goal weight.

Drinking green tea alone, even if drinking it religiously, will only get you so far. You still have to do your part and reduce your calorie intake and do some exercise. But let's explore how this tea can help you slimming down. As every little thing that helps in weight loss has it's place, it is well worth your time to have a look into this.

How can green tea help losing weight and how big is the effect at all?

Well, there seems to be consensus that drinking 3-5 cups green tea per day will increase your body's heat production, called thermogenesis. This is the same effect that eating cayenne pepper will have, which is also said to help in weight loss. However, for green tea it seems that the increased heat production will continue for about 24 hours while cayenne pepper rather gives your metabolism a boost and then the effect fades.

Provided you need to eat 2,000 calories to maintain your current weight your increased heat productions will lead to an extra 50-80 calories burned per day. This can translate in 7-8 pounds lost over the course of one year.

Although this does not sound much, you also have to look at other beneficial properties of grean tea. Like it's balancing influence on blood sugar, which means that you will not get such a big blood sugar spike when eating carbohydrates. The relating insulin level is more moderate and your cravings will be reduced. This is probably the biggest advantage of green tea, but also other substances like fibre and raw foods have this effect.

If burning more calories is you main issue, the overall effect of 50-80 extra calories burned is comparably small for drinking grean tea. In this case the only really effective method to burn a lot extra calories is exercise, and not sitting on your couch and sipping any tea!
